井戸の水の表面は澄んでいます。
しかし底のほうには泥と汚れがあるでしょう。
井戸をきれいにするならば、その全ての水を捨てなければなりません。
その際に泥水が表面に出てきます。
その水を井戸から捨てなければならず、それからたくさんの新しい水が湧いてきます。
ちょうどそれと同じように、心の深くに根差している過去において楽しんできた欲望の印象と傾向があります。
霊的な探求者がサーダナ（霊性の実践）を進めていくと、これらのヴァーサナ（印象・傾向）が醜く毒気のある姿で心の表面に出てきて、それらの欲望をもう一度楽しもうという圧力をかけてきます。
そのとき、神の探求者は堅固さを維持し、断固としてサーダナを継続しなければなりません。
なにがあってもそれらの圧力に屈してはならず、それらの欲望を身体的に満たそうとするべきではありません。

The surface of the water in a well will be clean.
But down below will remain mud and dirt.
When the well is to be cleaned, all the water it contains should be thrown out.
At that time the muddy water comes to the surface.
Then it has to be thrown out of the well, fresh and ocean water spring up in it. In the same way, there are tendencies and impressions of desires enjoyed in the past which have taken deep roots in the mind.
As the spiritual seeker advances in his sadhana these Vasanas come to the surface of his mind in all their ugly and virulent form and pressurizes the seeker to enjoy those desires once again.
At that time the seeker of God should remain firm and continue his Sadhana with determination.
In no case he should yield to their pressure and try to have physical satisfaction of those desires.
